Financial considerations always follow rapid production. Entering the final year of his three-year entry-level contract, Smith became eligible for an official extension on July 1, 2026. General manager Mike Grier faces the delicate task of balancing long-term salary cap commitments between Smith, Celebrini, and incoming defensive assets.

Recent league precedents provide clear blueprints. Comparable forward extensions range from bridge deals in the $6.5M, $7.5M range across three years to long-term commitments reaching eight years at $8M, $8.8M annually.
