Once you match your drive link count, pitch, and gauge, you must decide on tooth architecture. Replacement loops generally come in two primary cutter profiles: full chisel and semi chisel.
Full chisel chains feature square-cornered teeth that sever wood fibers with minimal drag. They cut fast through clean hardwoods and straight softwood timber. However, square corners dull rapidly when dragged through dirt, sand, frozen timber, or abrasive bark. Full chisel configurations also carry a higher risk of rotational kickback if the cutter nose strikes resistance.
Semi chisel chains feature rounded cutter corners. The rounded profile sacrifices roughly 10% to 15% in raw cutting speed compared to full chisel teeth, but retains its working edge significantly longer when cutting dirty firewood, downed storm limbs, or construction materials. For general firewood processing and cleanup, semi chisel chains provide superior operational durability and smoother feedback.
